1998. Canvas, gesso. 22x16x3 inches
I totally love this piece. And now that I know it’s essentially an unfolded box — and that that box was originally Pandora’s — I love it even more.
The journey from hope to faith, in a nutshell. Fantastic!
At first I thought a crucifix might not be the best way to reify faith, but I’ve noticed that McDonough has a tendency to expect the viewer to fill in the last mile — like with the Pint Glass, for instance — it’s actually remarkably like a pillow. As one reviewer put it, “it all depends on your state of mind”.
Recalling Claus Oldenburg’s soft sculptures, [Soft Cross] serves as an emblem of both the vulnerability and malleability of the Christian message, among other possible readings.
